Sculptures such as this are the silent sentinels of Florence, looking down and observing the daily exploits of locals and passers by.  I remember the dreaded heat and humidity of the day as a friend and I walked, exhausted through the square.  The day had been a long one, though it was only noon and we yearned for shade and comfort.  I remember looking up and seeing this figure, stately and proud, undisturbed by climate or pigeons and taking comfort in his shade.
